Kroeger, Helen M. (American, 1892-1986) Painting. “Winter Landscape.” Oil on Canvas. Signed lower left Helen M. Kroeger. In good condition, needs cleaning. Has a few small chips in the foreground. Framed in a period frame, which bears a paper label from the Anchorage Studio Mattituck L.I. N.Y. Kroeger is considered one of the Peconic Bay Impressionists an artist colony that began on the North Fork of Long Island in the early 1900's. Painting measures 14” high x 16” wide. Frame measures 17 ” x 19 ”.
From Askart: Like her husband, Otto Kurth, Helen Kroeger was trained as an illustrator. With him, she opened the Anchorage Studio in Mattituck New York in the 1930's. Kroeger and her husband became close friends and painting partners with Caroline M. Bell and often participated in exhibitions at the Bell studio on Love Lane. They also participated in exhibitions at the Old Town Arts & Crafts Guild, Parrish Art Museum and Guild Hall, East Hampton, NY. Together, the Kurth's traveled with Bell and the Peconic Bay Impressionists to New England and rented rooms at the Straitsmouth Inn, Gloucester, Massachusetts where the group often stayed. In 1960, Helen Kroeger and her husband moved to Mattituck, Long Island permanently. She died there in 1986.
