Description
Dolendo Zacharias (Dutch 1561-1604) Engraving Adam and Eve embracing, whilst Eve receives the Apple from the Serpent; after B. Spranger. Zacharias Dolendo was a Dutch reproductive engraver active during the last two decades of the 16th century. The older brother of the engraver and goldsmith Bartholomeus Willemsz. Dolendo (ca. 1571-1626), Zacharias was a student of Jacques de Gheyn II (1565-1629), probably while de Gheyn was an engraver for Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) in Haarlem. Working in Leiden, Dolendo engraved prints after designs by de Gheyn, Goltzius, Karel van Mander (1548-1606) and Bartholomaeus Spranger (1546-1611). Hollstein attributs eighty-eight prints to Dolendo. According to the biography in van Mander’s 1604 Schilder-boeck (Book on Painting), Dolendo died at a young age as a result of a disorderly life. 6.75"x4.625"; Mat 11"x16"
