Rare 1741 “Province of Georgia” Colonial Book by Martyn
1741-Dated Colonial Period, Printed Book entitled: “An Impartial Enquiry into the State and Utility of the Province of Georgia,” by Benjamin Martyn, Second Edition, Printed for W. Meadows, at the Angel in Cornhill, (London), Choice Very Fine.
This important historic printed Book on Georgia measures 5” x 7.75” containing 104 pages, in contemporary three-quarter leather over hard marbled boards. In this book the author Benjamin Martyn replies to those who were attempting to disparage the Colony of Georgia. Benjamin Martyn (1698-1763), was the Secretary to Oglethorpe's society for colonizing Georgia. The front free endpaper is detached, otherwise the interior is in very nice crisp condition with lightly edge-worn boards. Violet stamp on its title page shows this copy once belonged to the Rhode Island Historical Society at Providence. Pencil notation on last page reads, “A.R. Smith May 20, 1879.” An important very early Colonial treatise on a Colony without much of a population at the time. (Howes M354, Sabin 45001).
