German & Cyrillic, [one of 1500 copies], frontispiece stage design and 56 plates of costume designs by Petrizky, 27 colour, some heightened with gilt and/or silver, all tipped onto grey card, tissue guards, photographic portrait of the artist, introductory text with photographic illustrations, sketch-design head- & tail-piece, damp-staining to fore-edge of title and introduction, bookplate on front pastedown, contemporary pigskin-backed cloth, folio, [Soviet Union], StaatsVerlag der Ukraine, 1929. Russian avant-garde stage and costume designs for theater, ballet, and opera, dating from Petrizky's Constructivist period. An excellent example of 1920s soviet design, reminiscent of the works of Malevich and Bakst. Petrizky subsequently became better known for his utilisation & adaptation of Ukrainian folk art. Provenance: Russian-born British architect Serge Chermayeff (1900-96), with his attractively designed bookplate.
