Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche, ca. 450 to 700 CE. Oh so rare and so macabre! This pottery kero was adeptly created in the form of a well modeled and meticulously tattooed arm with a bent elbow and clenched fist. The detail on this piece is just amazing! Even beyond the remarkably intricate tattoos painted in chocolate brown and white, the anatomy is quite realistic down to the knuckles and fingernails. The Moche culture was quite barbaric by some modern standards and captives were systematically dismembered starting with the hands, their skin flayed and their blood was then imbibed from keros such as this. Now that would make for some gruesome movie scenes! Size: 6.25" W x 12" H (15.9 cm x 30.5 cm)
