Description
Ancient seas, ca. 400 million years ago. Both of these have been highly polished and have attractive reds, browns, whites, and blacks in their coloration. The first is a long, thin Orthoceras fossil. Orthoceras ("straight horn") was an ancient mollusk with a soft body that lived in a long, straight horn. As the body grew, it would create new, larger segments on the horn; hence the conical shape. The other is an ammonite, an extinct marine mollusk that was related to the living coleoid family, including octopus and squid. The name "ammonite" came from Pliny the Elder after the Egyptian god Ammon, who was typically depicted wearing ram's horns that Pliny thought these fossils resembled. Size of largest: 6.25" W x 9.25" H (15.9 cm x 23.5 cm)
