Ercole Barovier (1889-1972)
The designer and businessman Ercole Barovier was the son of Benvenuto Barovier. He joined the fatherly company Vetreria Artistica Barovier & C. when he was 30 years old. He was the artistic director of the company since 1926 and became the sole owner in 1936. The company was renamed Barovier & Toso in 1942 and Barovier remained the artistic director until 1972. During his 50 year career Ercole Barovier invented numerous decorative techniques that revolutionized the art of glass.
Barovier & Toso (est. 1942)
Barovier & Toso is an Italian glass company that dates back to the 13th century and is currently based at the Palazzo Contarini in Murano, Italy. Originally founded by the Barovier family, the company merged with the Toso family in 1942. Specializing in Venetian glass, including mother-of-pearl glass, crystalline glass and gold-free cornelian red glass, Barovier & Toso produces traditional drinking vessels, Venetian chandelier and glass art. The chief designer, Ercole Barovier, designed many well-known glass designs, including Brillantati, Zebrati, Crepuscolo, Cordonato d’Oro and Acanto.
