Description
Rare Stoneware Gemel with Impressed Bird Decoration, probably Southern or Midwestern U.S. origin, second half 19th century, conjoined jugs with applied tubular spouts, tooled shoulders, and ribbed central handle, each jug decorated three times with an impressed design of a bird perched on a log. Additional impressed star decoration to circumference of each jug, the top of each finial, and the ends of the handle. Surface covered in a mottled brown Albany slip glaze. This gemel is the first of its type we have seen. The overall style indicates it was likely made in the South or Midwest during the second half of the 19th century. Shallow chipping to spouts and minor wear to handle. H 9 1/2".
