Description
Circa 1820 Tennessee Drop Front Cherry Butlers Desk. Reeded post, turned feet and flamed mahogany veneered top edge. Desk has been fabricated from a reconfigured Cellarette, Sugar Chest or Southern Lift Top Blanket Chest. Dovetailed and chamfered drawers. Desk pigeon hole compartment appears to have been from a 19th century desk. Desk drop lid was tendoned in to chest post originally and top of desk was the hinged lid of the chest compartment. Desk measures 43" Wide X 46" High X 20" Deep. The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Journal, Winter 1997 Volume XXIII, Number 2, list a similar form from Davidson County, Tennessee 1830-1850 as a sugar bureau. Condition - Overall Good Condition. Some old repairs with inlay fitting mostly in keyhole area. Some small pieces of veneer missing top edge. Old hinge mortise marks, cigarette burn to top.
