Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guanajuato Valley, Chupicuaro culture, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A huge vessel of the Chupicuaro ceramic tradition, known for its extensive variety of forms, as well as color palettes and decorative programs. This form, called a 'shoe' vessel, is adorned in a brownware finish with nubbin-like decorative appliques and a turned-out rim that is hand-painted in brilliant red and 'attached' to the body at four points. Size: 12-1/2"W (31.75 cm) x 5-3/4"H (14.61 cm).
Provenance: Ex-private Houston, TX collection acquired at auction or local gallery between 1982 and 1994.
