Description
North America, ca. mid-18th century CE. This is an iron pipe tomahawk with very little rust; the piece was clearly cast from two parts and has an obvious casting seam. The bowl of the pipe has simple linear designs around it but otherwise the blade is undecorated. This particular example has a raised step (a pedestal) where the bowl stem meets the rest of the blade; this is a characteristic of the 18th century. Pipe tomahawks are the most desirable of the trade tomahawks. They were manufactured in Sheffield, England, in France, and in North America specifically to be presented as gifts to tribal chiefs, usually in Washington DC. They were often given handles made of ash, osage orange, or curly maple. Size: 6.6" L x 2.3" W (16.8 cm x 5.8 cm)
