832 pp., comprising Vol. VI, Whole No. 262 (Jan. 4, 1862) to Vol. VI, Whole No. 313 (Dec. 27, 1862). A later issue, Dec. 5, 1863, is bound in at the front. Profusely illustrated with wood engravings, many full page, some double page. (Folio) 40x27.5 cm (15¾x10¾") modern morocco-backed cloth, spine lettered in gilt.

The second year of the Civil War is graphically recorded by some of the finest illustrators America has to offer, including engravings after Winslow Homer, Thomas Nast, A.R. Waud and others; maps of the various battlefields plotting the action; birds-eye views of the principal theatres of action, etc. The actions include the bloody encounters at Antietam and Fredericksburg, Grant's success at Fort Donelson, the Burnside expedition to the Carolinas, and the endless maneuverings of the Army of the Potomac, as McClellan sought to avoid a premature encounter with the enemy. Includes, in the November 15th issue, one of Winslow Homer's most famous depictions of the Civil War, "A Sharp-Shooter on Picket Duty".

Condition

A few page edges worn, some with repair; very good in a fine modern binding.
