A first edition of this somewhat controversial travelogue, detailing the author's travels around Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba among other places, with chapters on the customs of the local people and discussions on the ethics of slavery, as well as geographical and geological descriptions. The return journey passes through the United States, and there is much material on contemporary politics, slavery, the Civil War, Black Americans, etc. Also a meeting with Longfellow and an Emerson lecture.
