ROCKINGHAM CO., VA HEPPLEWHITE WALNUT CHEST OF DRAWERS, rectangular top with double beaded edge above four graduated scratch-beaded drawers, case with scratch-reeded corners, upper skirt also scratch beaded and with spaced blocks of crosshatching, boldly scalloped skirt, raised on flaring French feet. Yellow pine secondary wood, teardrop-shape bone escutcheons, very rare original shell and acanthus leaf brasses marked "STAMP'D" under bails. Note: This chest is the fifth example to surface featuring these distinctive scratch-reed and crosshatch decorations and the second example retaining the unusual brasses seen here. The other recorded chests include a two over four drawer semi-tall example and another having a two over three drawer configuration. All specimens have been found in Rockingham Co.

Exceptional condition, refinished in the 1950s, small loss to one rear foot, one escutcheon replaced, minor cracks at feet.
