Description
Original 1852 Japanese Woodblock Print by Toyokuni III (1786-1854). Exceptional color and detail. This is a scarce Kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Ebizo V as the evil Sansho Dayu in the play Mukashi Banashi Sansho Dayu. Here, Sansho grimaces angrily as he draws his sword. He wears a geometric print kimono trimmed with a dragon patterned fabric, and acloth hat. His white beard and hair are finely embossed, as are his eyebrows. The panels behind him feature a scene of birds flying above splashing waves. A great, bold image. Signed Toyokuni ga in Toshidama Cartouche. Published in 1852. Gallery framed and double matted. In frame 25.50x20.50x1. Image area 9x13.50. Wt. 8 pds PROVENANCE A Historic Charlotte Street Home, Charleston, SC
