The canvas appears to have an old re-lining. The original canvas is very coarse and might be 18th century. There may be much old retouching but it is difficult to discern. There is retouching on the rim of the man's hat, on his mouth, and on or around both of his hands. There is retouching in the lady's hair and shadows around her face. There is a horizontal split or wide crack on her cheek. There is retouching on he shoulder and on her lower hand. There is retouvhing in various parts of the dark background. The surface is lumpy and unevenly varnished. The iron corner keys are dated 1885.
