Complete Talmud - 21 Volume Talmud Bavli - Zhitomir, 1858-1864 - Printing Press of the Grandsons of the Slavita Rabbi - Glosses and Ownership Inscriptions.The Zhitomir Talmud, a complete set of 21 large and complete volumes. Ownership inscriptions and a few handwritten glosses. Zhitomir, 1858-1864.
The printing press of the Shapira family was re-established in the city of Zhitomir in 1847 by the grandsons of the Slavita Rabbi, Rabb Chanina Lipa and Rabbi Yehoshua Heschel Shapira, and was active until 1864. In this printing press the entire Talmud was printed for the third time, 20 volumes, with the Rosh and the Maharsha, Rif and Ran and many more additions. The layout of the page is one of the most magnificent there had been up to this period.
The books that were printed by the Slavita Rabbi, his sons and grandsons, are known to have a special holiness. It is told that even holding a book which was printed in Slavita or Zhitomir - is a segulah for protection and success. It is known that the rabbis acted with special holiness and purity whilst printing, and even the printing instruments and letters were immersed in the Mikvah before beginning the work.
Handwritten signatures on different volumes: "The governor David Shlomo Berenstien Halevi". Stamp: "Yonah Kirshroit". Various stamps with Latin letters. Ownership inscription on the Eiruvin volume: "This Gemara belongs to the avrech Shaul Kramarsh", together with a stamp in Latin letters: "Kramarsh Kalusha". A curled Askenazi Rabbinic signature on the Chulin volume: Yissachar Ber ben Rabbi Shlomo Zalman… [the Vilna Gaon's brother?]". Signatures: "Dushinksky".
Grammatical glosses and corrections of references in the volumes: Shabbat, Eiruvin, Pesachim, Rosh Hashana, Baba Batra, Chulin.
Condition: General condition is excellent. Includes two color title pages for all the volumes, and additional title pages at the beginning of each tractate. In some of the volumes there are a few pages with slight moth damage. There are also a small number of pages in a few volumes with restored tears. Wear and light use damage on some of the pages. Ancient leather covers, not original.
