James Carroll Beckwith, American, 1852-1917, Portrait of Mary Margaret MacDonald Frothingham (1864 - 1926) (in a pale blue satin gown, oil on canvas, c. 1885, original Beaux Arts giltwood frame, signed at upper left.
NOTE: Beckwith studied with Carolus-Duran in Paris in the 1870's and shared a studio there with John Singer Sargent, a life-long friend. Beckwith turned to portrait painting to make his living, and it is for this genre he became best known. He was an elected National Academician and also a highly influential teacher at the Art Students League during the 1880s-90s, the period in which this portrait was painted.
NOTE: bears a Parisian shipping label dating from its ownership by the late Countess Mary Tolstoy of New York and Paris, 1884-1976, born a Frothingham, a descendent of the old New York family.
NOTE: Ex. coll: By direct descent in the family of the sitter to the present.(FURN1000)(TC)
Measurements: 32 x 25, 39 1/2" x 33 1/2" framed
Condition: slight rippling to canvas extreme upper left corner, original canvas and frame.
