Description
1st-2nd century AD. A bronze strigil with flat-section handle and curved C-section pointed blade; the handle with silver(?) inlay to the reverse in a herringbone pattern, stamped maker's mark ''[?]AI'; the blade with pointille decoration to the outer face of scrolled tendrils and a hatched dolphin 105 grams, 23.5cm (9 1/4"). Property of a Surrey collector; acquired in the early 1970s. See Roach Smith, C. The Antiquities of Richborough, Reculver and Lymne in Kent, London, 1850, p.203-4 for discussion of the type.
