19th-20th century AD. A gilt-bronze hollow-formed figurine of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara seated on a lotus flower dais, attributes in his eight hands, four faces to his crowned head. 2.4 kg, 22.5cm (8 3/4"). From the Cheuk family collection; acquired before 1990. The depiction of Avalokiteshvara with four heads enables him to look in all directions to seek out those who are suffering. the objects that he holds are symbolic of the suffering of all living creatures and a means to end that suffering through righteous living. The noose binds all life to the wheel of existence, the trident represents the past, present and future, the bow brings the arrows of clear thought, and the thunderbolt is symbolic of wisdom.
