Item Details
Description
Egypt, probably pre-Dynastic/Naqada I period, ca. 4400 to 3500 BCE. This is a disc-shaped mace head in a dull reddish brown hematite with a drilled center hole and a smooth surface; the piece has a very pleasing weight in the hand and was likely mounted on perishable material in its original use. Items shaped like this one have been found in Naqada I tombs of both males and females; they were later replaced by piriform mace heads. They may be an indication of the authority of the buried person, as they were later, but little is known about this early period. This is a very ancient piece! Size: 2.2" W x 1.25" H (5.6 cm x 3.2 cm).

Provenance: Ex- K. Dorney collection
