Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Mayan territories, El Salvador, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A large pottery bowl decorated with two active monkeys striding forward, their long, spiraled tails behind, all hand painted in red and black on an orange ground with a black border on the exterior rim and a red one on the interior. Simian iconography was quite symbolic in the Pre-Columbian world, and the monkey's whimsical antics have always fascinated human beings. Simultaneously interpreted as both a mimic and a contradiction of human culture, the monkey was thought to mediate between man and the supernatural. A lovely polychrome bowl replete with symbolic iconography. Size: 8.25" W x 3.25" H (21 cm x 8.3 cm)
