Description
A Civil War Era rod (circa 1865) of Calcutta cane in 6 strip construction with 4 strip tips. Butt, mid and one tip are full length, with the second tip broken at the guide 4 inches below the top. Nickel silver reel seat with mortised hardwood filler, wedding band ring above the butt cap sliding band, and upper band just prior to grip. This upper band is neatly marked "C.F. Murphy, Newark, N.J." Grip is rattan wrapped with spiraled red silk, and there is a nickel silver winding check at the top. Wraps are red, with full intermediates and doubled intermediates at the ferrules, in the style that, later in the century, would be adopted by John Landman. Hanging ring guides with a round top guide. Ferrules are spiked nickel silver, the females being welted and shouldered, the males shouldered. Included is a truly unique form fitted case, a single piece of hardwood 49 inches long, slightly tapered, and having four bored cylindrical holes, incredibly velvet lined, by a process yet to be determined, to accept each section. The case is included, but the rod is packed in a well made bag and contemporary aluminum tube to avoid any fears that sections might swell with weather changes and be difficult to remove from the formed case. An historic and beautifully appointed fly rod. Pictured by Hatton (pp 12-13) and Kerr (p128). From the Thomas C. Kerr collection of Historic 19th century fishing rods.
