Description
Attributed to Harris & Co. (American (Boston, Massachusetts), 19th century). A Black Hawk horse copper weather vane depicting a galloping stallion, the flattened full body figure with natural verdigris patina. Approximate height 23.25", width 34", depth 3". Provenance: From the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia.Reference: "The Art of the Weathervane", Steve Miller, page 125. Note: around 1871, Henry Leach (American (Pennsylvania), 1809-1885) carved a wooden horse sculpture (now housed in the Smithsonian American Art Museum) after a lithograph portrait of the famous race horse of the 1840s, this sculpture being used by various manufacturers including Cushing & White Co. (American (Waltham, Massachusetts), 1865-1933) to create hollow iron molds from which many copper weathervanes were produced.
