Description
Untitled (Renaissance couple sitting.) Oil on board, signed lower right , V. Nehlig Dimensions: H6" x W 4" Condition: Small crack and dirt to the surface. Note: "Victor Nehlig studied art in his native city, in the studios of Cogniet and Abel de Pujol. By 1856, after spending some time in Havanna, Cuba, he settled in New York City; but he returned to Europe in 1872, where he remained until his death. Nehlig is primarily known for his paintings based on American history and folk lore. Several works, such as his Hiawatha and Pocahontas and Captain Smith evince the French predilection for romantic renderings of the American "noble savage". The artist is believed to have toured the U.S. with Pocahontas. Nehlig exhibited at the NAD in 1862-1863 and again in 1870."
