Description
19th century AD. A matched pair of carved walnut(?) corbels with high-relief scene to one long face, scrolls to the reverse; one scene with a robed figure beside a bearded figure in broad-brimmed hat with an axe over his shoulder, the other scene with similar figures and a mythical creature; applied foliage panels to the outer ends. Property of an American lady; acquired 1970s-1990s. Carved brackets such as these were used in temples and family shrines dedicated to the Daoist gods where the worship of the ancestors played a key role in daily ritual.
