Description
Japanese, Edo Period (1603-1868), Kano School. A hand painted six-panel floor screen, apparently unsigned, verso with with label on green patterned back "Naga Antiques 145 E. 61st Street NY, NY 10021 615 S-6B Pavilion with Bridge Kano School 17th Cent. 42" High x 112" Long". Screen depicting a pavilion with two character text in red sign under sloped thatched roof near a lake, with foot bridge, with water fowl (ducks) and other birds including peacock, red bird and brown bird, with stylized trees, flowers and rocky cliffs, with muted gold metallic background, with two fabric borders within ebonized wood frame accented with silvered metal pierced ornament at corners and middle sections. Each panel approximately 42" x 19.125".
Condition
Panels with scattered cracks to paper surface with earlier repairs (some professional); see raised rippling in sky. Panels with light wear to all painted surfaces with scattered abrasions and some losses commensurate with age and light handling. Two thin horizontal creases spanning the length of the screen, likely from previous folding. Far left panel with inverse c-shaped tear to paper, approximately 3.25" x 5.5". Third panel from the left with three oblong punctures to paper, not disruptive of subject matter. Under black light examination some scattered small areas of retouching (less than 5%). Scuffing and minor losses to black frame commensurate with handling. Light toning with scattered rips (some repaired) to paper surround.
