Item Details
Description
West Africa, Northern Ivory Coast, Dan, ca. early 20th century CE. A finely carved small, personal maskette created by the Dan peoples, used as a talisman for travel by a family member, replete with features characteristic of Dan masks including a concave face, high-domed forehead, upturned nose, pointed chin, and protruding mouth. Such maskettes were created to connect the owner with a specific spirit that is believed to offer guidance and protection. Traditionally, these are hidden and only revealed during special rituals. In addition such maskettes are carried by their owners during travels. A wondrous example with a very smooth dark brown patina typical of northern examples! One tiny perforation at top right for suspension. Custom stand. Size: 1.5" W x 2.75" H (3.8 cm x 7 cm); 4.125" H (10.5 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos, Chicago, IL acquired before 1970.
