AH FOO (HONG KONG, 19TH CENTURY) CHINESE EXPORT BRASS-BOUND CAMPHORWOOD CAMPAIGN CHEST, in two parts, the upper section having a central drop-down writing board concealing a fitted desk interior, prospect door retaining original label, flanked by banks of two short drawers over a single full drawer; the lower section with two full drawers raised on turned feet mortised into the bottom of the case. Retains original cast-brass carrying handles, applied strap braces, and hardware, fine old surface with rich color. Late 19th century. 48 1/2" H, 33 1/4" W, 19" D.
Scattered light scratches and wear to surface. Small losses each end at bottom edge of upper section and to desk interior.
Catalogue Note: According to family history, this desk was formerly in the collection of Charles Gilpin-Brown (1857-1906). Born in England to a landed family, Gilpin-Brown immigrated to the United States in the late 19th century and established an extensive ranch in Livermore, Colorado.
