TWO PAIRS OF GERMAN AND ENGLISH GLAZED STONEWARE BOTTLES, 19TH CENTURY, comprising two Rhein:Preussen bottles with rounded lip above a ringed neck and sloped shoulder, over impressed circular logo and "GEORGKREUZBERG AHRWEILER RHEINPREUSSEM," opposite a loop handle, height: 11 5/8"; two Castle Brewery Guildford cylindrical bottles, height: 6 3/4". NOTE: In the 1850's Georg Kreuzberg, a wine merchant from Ahrweiler, began bottling water from the Apollinaris spring. By the 1860's over 40,000 bottles of this mineral water had been shipped worldwide but by 1878 the refinery was forced to shut its doors. The Castle Brewery of Guildford was owned by Lascelles, Tickner & Co, which was a brewery as well as bottler of mineral water and soft drinks.
Condition
One bottle is missing part of handle, two small chips on lip, the other has a base rim chip, each have surface wear and buildup throughout Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
