AN AMERICAN POLYCHROME NEEDLEWORK ON LINEN SAMPLER, LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY, of rectangular form and executed in polychrome silk threads on a linen panel, with examples of the various stitching abilities, showing a central rectangular structure with ascending staircase and conforming box form flat roof enclosing a band of letters, with two colored tree filled corner urns, beneath a small two door peaked roof building with fasces symbol finial beneath a crown, flanked by birds perched on flowering foliage in two handled urns above a pair of striped columns surmounted by eagles on spheres, further flanked by two large green trees with trunks centering stylized green shields, beneath leafy branches suspending berried clusters above various wildlife opposite two child like figures and their companion dogs. Height: 6 1/2" Width: 17 1/2" NOTE: This sampler is void of the usual subjects, but the iconography leads one to believe it has Masonic or some other secret society connection. It has been suggested that it might be the work by a royalist sympathizer's child. If someone knows, please enlighten and thank you.

Good condition considering age and materials, with discoloration of linen panel due to environmental exposure, fading of colors, probably dry,unexamined out of frame.
