Description
Africa, Ivory Coast, ca. 20th century CE. An intriguing blend of cultural references grace this hand carved and finely painted piece which combines a face mask with a superstructure that features a soccer player wearing western attire consisting of a tee shirt, cleats, and shorts - kicking a ball from an arch. This piece is labeled No. 118 on a Rosen collection label. It was exhibited in "More Than A Pretty Face: Masks from West and Central Africa from the Rosen Collection" the Free Library Gallery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 2011 and published in "Masks from West and Central Africa: A Celebration of Color and Form (Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., 2013) number 199." The superstructure of this mask (Fig. 199) consists of a man in shorts and a tee shirt who is kicking a ball with his right foot. With his right arm raised and his left arm lowered, he is steadying himself by holding on to a segmented arch that may represent a soccer goal. Decorative features on the face mask include a forehead dot and a pair of cheek dots.
