Item Details
Description
A Roman glass bowl from the region of Baalbek, Lebanon.

Dimensions: 2 3/4"h X 4 1/2"d

Provenance: Collection of the late Mr. Hugh D. Farley.

Mr. Farley acquired the pieces while he was the Director of the US Foreign Aid Program (called Point Four) in Beirut, Lebanon from 1954 to 1956. He was interested in archaeology. When he and his family traveled throughout the Middle East to visit different sites during that time period, he bought pieces of the ancient glass and pottery in shops and from individual vendors.

After Beirut, he went on to serve as an Evaluation Officer for the International Cooperation Administration for Two (2) years, followed by a position in Seoul, Korea as Assistant Director of the US Foreign Aid Program there from 1959 to 1961. Leaving work with the government, he was then hired as Executive Director of Church World Service in 1961 and stayed there until 1965. He died in 1966 at 53 years of age.
