Heritage is pleased to offer a selection of historically important and
new works by visionary designer, Charles Hollis Jones (b.1945).
Jones was raised on a working farm in rural Indiana during the
1950's, the youngest of 8 children. At the tender age of 16, with the
blessing of his supportive parents, Jones moved to Los Angeles
and founded CHJ Designs.
Jones started designing clean-lined modern furniture using Lucite
acrylic, a newly available product not commonly used previously
for furniture design. The results, due to Jones terrific design sense
and technical proficiency were immediately successful. His work is
collected widely and his designs are a perennial favorite of interior
designers and discerning collectors alike. The Los Angeles Times
has referred to Charles as a "Pioneer in acrylic design" To this day
he enjoys active gallery representation and a continual stream of
stellar press. Hollis Jones is considered one of the most important
living makers working on the West Coast from the Post-War
Design era.
Frank Sinatra, and other stars, were among Jones' first clients and
important early commissions. Southern writer Tennessee Williams
personally commissioned Jones to design a special chair for his use while writing, and this became the classic "Wisteria" chair
(see examples on offer).
In the 1970's Jones designed his award-winning "Edison" Lamp. Using original Thomas Edison designed light bulbs, this
spare Lucite-and-steel lamp show its own inner workings to perfect impact. This stunning design won a California Design 11
competition and even special design recognition from the German Government.
Heritage is honored to offer both vintage and new designs by Hollis-Jones to our collectors in this sale. New works include the
magnificent "Tree of Life" table designed by the artist as an homage to his beloved late father, a career arborist back home in
Indiana. Also on offer are examples of rare vintage works by Hollis-Jones including his sexy classic "Sling" chair, the Edison
Lamp and "Squiggly Wiggly" chair.
