Description
Edwin Longsden Long (British, 1829-1891), Claudius Appears Before the Senate, 1869, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, canvas: 34”h x 62.5”w, overall (with frame): 40.5"h x 68.5"w. Note: The painting is depicting Claudius (in red) approaching the Senate to ask permission to marry Agrippina the Younger (his niece). Agrippina the Younger was the mother of Nero who later succeeded Claudius to become the Emperor of the Roman Empire. Edwin Long did not create many Roman scenes, even though he studied in Rome on a trip in 1867. This painting is one of only a few historic Roman paintings created by the artist in his lifetime. The date on the painting of 1869 means it was completed 2 years after his trip to Rome.
