Description: Two carved jade handled mirrors with painted enamel scenes in original boxes. The larger mirror measures 9" long and comes with brass accents and hand painted enamel scene of a pair of ducks and lotus flowers. The smaller mirror is 5.5" long and 2" in diameter. Brass accents and an enamel painted scene of two lovebirds on a tree branch.


History: People have used mirrors both as household objects and as objects of decoration throughout history. The earliest made mirrors were hand mirrors; mirrors large enough to reflect the whole body appeared in the 1st century AD. Celts adopted hand mirrors from the Romans and by the end of the Middle Ages had become quite common throughout Europe. They were usually made of silver, though sometimes of polished bronze.

Both mirrors are in very good condition. The original lined cardboard boxes show wear and have some tearing, especially the smaller one.
