Description
Reginald Grooms (American, Cincinnati, 1900-1989) oil on canvas painting of Zimmerman's Grocery an important establishment in Amish country located in Intercourse, Pennsylvania done in 1938. Grooms spent much of the Summer in 1938 in the York-Lancaster area of Pennsylvania doing sketches of the Amish community. One of the paintings from that group, After Sunday Service was exhibited in the Golden Gate Exhibition in 1939 and another, Groom Toss was exhibited in the 1939 New York World's Fair. This work and a pencil sketch of several Amish women were purchased directly from the artist in the early 1980's. Sight size of the oil is 21 1/2 by 31 1/2 inches and overall size with newer frame is 30 7/8 by 40 7/8 inches. Signed R. Grooms lower left. Excellent original condition. Sight size of the pencil sketch is 12 x 9 inches and with newer frame, 22 3/4 by 18 1/2 inches. It is signed Study R.Grooms lower left.
