Rare, important and monumental Rookwood Iris glaze vase with life size white cattleya orchids, the work of Carl Schmidt in 1903. No doubt made for a special (now unknown) occasion, the 19 1/8 inch vase bears the special shape number of S 1611 A, denoting the largest size (A) of a shape created for a unique experience. Two fully opened orchids and a single bud adorn the front of the vase and a single flower can be found on the back. Marks include the company logo, the date, shape number, an incised W for white (Iris) glaze and the impressed monogram of Mr. Schmidt. The vase is uncrazed but does have two unobtrusive, short scratches. This is certainly one of the best, large Iris glaze vases to ever come on the market.
