Description
This is an rare beaded knife sheath and trade knife from the Sioux-Santee Native American Indians from the turn of the Century 19th-20th. The piece shows a parfleche rawhide lining with Indian tanned hide construction with a yellow ocher mineral dye. The front of the sheath shows excellent 19th Century glass trade seed beads in chalk white, greasy yellow, sky blue, dark blue, and red. The scabbard has wonderful long cut hide fringe along the outer edge and shows museum quality well preserved condition. The trade knife shows carved Rocky Mountain Elk grips with copper rivets and a brass hilt. The blade is a bowie style with hand file carved serration along the back edge. Provenance: The piece is from a large Native American and Early Western artifact private collection in Iowa and was recovered in the Iowa area. The knife is 9.5”L with a 5 3/8”L blade. Scabbard or sheath is 8 1/8”L x 3 3/8”W with additional 4.5” fringe and a 7”L top strap. Knife and sheath are 17.5”L with fringe.
