NEW ENGLAND FUR TRADING
HEZEKIAH SPENCER (1794? - 1864?) American fur dealer located in Suffield, Connecticut. Spencer bought from small dealers and peddlers, whom he engaged to travel into the hinterlands to buy pelts each year. He then sold large lots of fur to dealers in New York, who shipped directly to the markets of Europe and China. A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Suffield, Mar. 8, 1825 to Samuel Catlin. In part: "...It is my opinion that Red Fox skins will be worth some more than my bill to you. Also the first rate of Martin skins. As to Beaver...they will decline in Price...Other Furs remain much as when I saw you last...". Very good.
