YUNG WING
(1828 - 1912) The first Chinese student to graduate from an American university (Yale, 1854). He also brought students from China to study in the U.S. A naturalized American citizen, but his status was later revoked under the Naturalization Act of 1870. Scarce A.L.S. 2pp.8vo., Hartford, Jan. 14, 1865 discussing photographs of himself he wishes to order: "...please have eight of the one that holds up the book and four of the one with the book flat on the table. Of mine own, kindly prepare two dozens. They should be all of the dark shade...I presume you preserve the negatives...". With an excellent carte de visite photograph of Wing, backstamp by S. H. Waite, Hartford. Two pieces.
