Méret Oppenheim (1919-1985)
At a young age, Méret Oppenheim came into contact with the very influential German writers, Hermann Hesse, Gottfried Keller, Goethe and Rilke. At the beginning of the 1930s, she met Alberto Giacometti and Hans Arp in Paris, who invited her to exhibit at the ‘Salon des Surindépendants’. And in 1933, she became acquainted with Max Ernst, as well as being photographed by Man Ray in the same year. From these experiences she quickly entered into the social circles of André Breton and Marcel Duchamp. She was soon referred to as the ‘Surrealist’s Muse’. From 1936 on, she dedicated herself to fashion designs. Oppenheim also realized art works in public spaces, including theOppenheim fountain in Bern. She was a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and exhibited at the Documenta in Kassel. Works by Oppenheim are found today in many major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
