Description
Walter Dexter (1876-1958)Oil on Canvas. Signed with the initials WD on the lower right hand corner.A large painting measuring 37" 1/8 by 43"1/4 framed .Sight measures 30" 1/4 inches by 36" 1/4 inches. A well listed English artist: Walter Dexter was a member of Royal british academy and he was an excellent painter in oil and watercolours. Born at Wellingborough in Northhamptonshire on June 12th, 1876. Studied at Birmingham Municipal schools of art and at the Birmingham Royal Society of Artists.At first was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and a painting from this early period, The workshop, was purchased by the Norwich Art Gallery. He then studied in Belgium & Holland and afterwards settled in King's Lynn England.Took over a studio in Kensington in 1904 and exhibited at The R.A. and R.B.A and was elected R.B.A in 1905. This painting before was exhibited at that exhibition and there is only a small portion of the sticker remaining in the verso of this lovely work.He also , illustrated A Wanderer in Paris by the E.V. Lucas, English Cathedrals, Edingburgh and the Lothians and other works.Lived for many years at King's Lynn where he died on the 12th of February 1958 following an accident on his bicycle in town.
