PROVENANCE: A Paris, France and Charleston, SC Private Collection. Son of a Blacksmith, born in Roanne- in the Loire, France in 1905 - Died in Thizy in 1997. He began work as a ironworker in the village of Thizy. He had always sketched but turned to painting full time after WWII. He painted crowds of people, stations, ports, street scenes and red light districts. He painted in numerous provinces of France, Corsica in 1854, the mining landscape of Merlebacj in 1956; Provence in 1957-1958 and he also painted Paris , preferring the views of Montmarte and landscapes of the outlying areas, particularly Joinville-le-Pont. He was represented in Paris by the Galleries: Weil, Para and Bernheim. Montet won many medals and awards during his lifetime, including 1st Prize at the Salon of the city of St. Die in 1937, 1st Prize Drawing and Painting Exhibition Artists of Education in 1948 in Lyon, Gold Medal at the Building Salon des Artistes Group Paris / Lyon in 1955, Royal Gallery in Paris, selected by the jury in the final of the Grand Prix 1959 and many many more. He did nearly 450 exhibitions in France alone and is in numerous French musem permenant collections. He exhibited in the USA, England, Switzerland, Germany, Canada and Belgium. He recieved the Silver medal of Arts, Sciences and Letters City of Paris in 1948, the Medal of Civic Merit in 1967 and the Chevalier of Arts and Letters in 1978. Weight 6 pds.
