1824 Lafayette’s Tour of America Commemorative Portrait
c. 1824, Marquis de Lafayette Commemorative Brass Box with Was Figure of the French Aristocrat and Military Officer who fought for the United States during the Revolutionary War, Choice Very Fine.
Historic, decorative 1824 triumphant return Tour of America Commemorative Brass Boxed Display contains within its top lid a beautiful Cast Wax chest-up profile of Lafayette mounted beneath glass dome. The display box measures 5.5” x 6.5” x 1.5” overall and is hinged at the rear to open. The Hand-painted Wax Portrait figure depicts the General in his prime at the time of the Revolution. The figure’s nose is slightly bent toward the glass and the black hair ribbon has separated but is not loose, overall a wonderful artwork. The original rounded glass dome has been secured to the lid by crimping the surrounding thin brass metal rim around the dome. A very rare original Marquis de Lafayette Commemorative artwork, meant for display. The first we have offered.
Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de Lafayette, Marquis de Lafayette (1757 – 1834), in the U.S. often known simply as “Lafayette,” was a French aristocrat and military officer who fought for the United States in the American Revolutionary War. A close friend of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson, Lafayette was a key figure in the French Revolution of 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830.

President James Monroe and Congress inivted Lafayette to visit the United States in 1824, in part to celebrate the new nation’s upcoming 50th Anniversary. His tour was received with wild acclaim by the public.
