Description
This stunning black and tan lacquer kimono box is delicately inlayed with mother of pearl. The highly unique and unusual motif features a Persian cat with mother of pearl inlayed eyes hiding in the branches and blossoms of a Hong Kong orchid tree. The lip of the interior is trimmed in red lacquer and features a gold moth pattern. The inside is painted gold and features painted flowers which were likely added later. This piece dates to the Meiji period (1860-1926). Measures approximately 18 x 13 x 6 inches. Condition: In overall solid condition. There is a piece of tape on the top of the lacquer box. There are water spots across the face of the cat. Two of the four bottom corners are chipped. The mother of pearl appears to be completely intact and free from cracks and chips. Measures 7 x 17.75 x 14 inches.
