Description
The French metal worker Ferdinand Barbedienne died on March 21, 1891 and was mourned by many in the world of sculpture. It was said that he strove to the highest quality in his castings Albert Susse said of him that he was the "pride of the nation" and that that he "carried the splendor of our industry so loftily to all international competitions". His work is truly fabulous - his colours rich and deep. This tazza or bon bon dish may have been part of a garniture or set but its beauty allows it to stand alone. It is a substantial piece and weighs 1 pound 7 ounces. The height to the rim of the bowl is 3 1/2 inches - the diameter 4 1/2 inches. The beautiful handles add a further 1 1/4 inches to the height. The enamel is gorgeous and romantic - flowers and leaves intertwine on a rich blue ground. In excellent condition in the main - there is a little scuffing to the gilt inside the bowl and two very small areas where the enamel has suffered a small abrasian - please see images.
