Description
West Africa, Cameroon, ca. early 20th century CE. This is a prestige knife, complete with a thick hide scabbard. It has a wide, tapering steel blade that is surmounted by a carved wooden pommel handle. The Bamun peoples are descendants of the Kingdom of Bamun, a pre-colonial Bantu-speaking state, and are known for their large ceremonial knives, which relate to signifying an individual's role within their complex secret-society based culture. Size: 23.75" L x 6" W (60.3 cm x 15.2 cm)
