Well-written account of Cooke's military experiences in the West, which began in 1829, when as a young lieutenant he served on a military escort commanded by Major Bennett Riley to guard the Santa Fe traders from depredations. He later served at Fort Atkinson, and in 1845 led an escort for emigrants from Fort Leavenworth to Oregon, returning via Bent's Fort, at which point the narrative ends. Field notes that "The author was personally engaged in several battles with the Camanches and Sads and Foxes, and nearly half his volume is composed of narratives of events connected with Indian warfare." He gives a long account of Hugh Glass's adventures, and there is much interesting material on Walker, Fitzpatrick, and other old plainsmen. This second printing, two years after the first, is distinguished by Cooke's rank being given as colonel on the title-page, rather than lieutenant colonel. Field 359; Howes C740; Rittenhouse 132; Wagner-Camp 288:2.
