Description
on Masonite, well listed artist, image area 18" X 24".....Kelsey Ogden Raymond (1926 - 2000) (1)A popular Nova Scotia painter, Kelsey Ogden Raymond (aka: Kelsey Raymond) was born in New York City, and died in Digby, Nova Scotia, near Smith's Cove, Nova Scotia where he had lived since the 1950s. (2)Raymond's primary medium was oil paint applied with a palette knife. His subjects included coastal scenes, landscapes, historic buildings, portraits and figures. His styles were Impressionism* and Realism*.Quote: "Thickly painted by use of a palette-knife, Kelsey Raymond's interpretations never become sentimental or 'touristy' in appeal. Lobster-pots, nets and wharf-litter have consciously been set aside by the artist in favor of the fundamental qualities of movement, mass and form. Rarely, if ever, have I seen rocky landscapes and raging seas painted with more characteristic strength and artistic honesty." (3)His education included studies at the Horton Academy, Wolfville, Nova Scotia (before World War II); Acadia University, Wolfville, Nova Scotia (briefly, after serving in World War II), the National Academy of Design*, New York City (one year scholarship, c.1946); with Jerry Farnsworth (c.1946); at the Art Students League of New York*, New York City (c.1946), under Edwin Dickinson, Robert Beverly Hale, Julian Edwin Levi and Kenneth Hayes Miller; and at the Mount Allison School of Fine and Applied Arts, Sackville, N.B. (Sept.1950-March 1952), under Alex Colville and Lawren Phillips Harris. (4)(5)(6)For many years Raymond sold his paintings from the "Cabin" in the Village of Smith's Cove. His paintings were also the subject of a solo exhibition at Ars Classica Gallery, Montreal in 1960.In the summer of 1998, Raymond was the subject of a solo exhibition titled "Structures" at the Admiral Digby Museum, Digby, Nova Scotia. The Admiral Digby Museum is currently planning a Kelsey Raymond exhibition titled "Boats" for the summer of 2015.According to the Canadian Heritage Information Network* his works are in the permanent collection of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (Halifax). Footnotes:(1) Please note: Raymond's obituary records the place and date of his death as Digby General Hospital, Digby, Nova Scotia July 14, 2000. Source: Obituary dated Saturday July 15, 2000.(2) Please note: While Raymond was born in Brooklyn, New York his parents were from Nova Scotia. Several sources say that he came to Canada in 1951; however, according to his widow, as a child, he summered at Smith's Cove with his grandparents and in the 1930s he was sent to Horton Academy in Nova Scotia where, other than while attending art schools, he lived for the rest of his life. Source: Email from Sheryl Stanton and Mary Lou Raymond, dated June 18, 2014.(3) Source: "Kelsey Raymond" by Dorothy Pfeiffer, page 18, The Gazette, Montreal, April 23, 1960.(4) Please note: Mrs. Raymond (widow) is the primary source for schooling places and dates and while they are approximate they are based on the fact that she met Kelsey, in September 1950, while they were attending the Mount Allison School of Fine Arts.(5) Please note: A Dictionary of Canadian Artists and The Collector's Dictionary of Canadian Artists at Auction reiterate the same art education record for Raymond as each other and similar to the one provided by Mrs. Raymond, but they provide no dates. They both also add that he studied "with Farnsworth", but they do not say where or when. We presume they are referring to Jerry Farnsworth the prominent American artist and educator who taught at the Art Students' League*, New York and who had his own art schools in North Truro, Massachusetts and Sarasota, Florida.(6) Please note: Until it was closed in 1959, Horton Academy was a prep school for Acadia University. Raymond's connection to the school and university go back to at least 1884 when his grandmother Clara Belle Marshall Raymond was the first woman to graduate from Acadia University, and one of the first women in the British Empire to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree (Kate Edger is generally accepted to have been the first women in the British Empire to earn a BA; she graduated from the University of New Zealand in 1877).
